Information about Elounda
Elounda lies at a distance of about 7 km from Agios Nikolaos. It was a small fishing village before the tourists discovered it. Large luxury hotel chains were built and was turned into a top holiday destination in Crete. It consists of 5 villages (Sxisma being the only one located by the sea). By night Elounda looks more inviting, the harbour aglitter with the lights of tavernas and bars. The pleasant but unremarkable town beach, to the north of the port, can get very crowded. On the southern side of Elounda an artificial causeway leads to the Kolokytha Peninsula.
The beach in Elounda is sandy, considered from the best in Crete . Also famous is the small island of Spinalonga just opposite of Elounda harbour , there is a Venetian fortress built in 1579. There is a boat connection to Spinalonga about every half an hour. During Venetian rule, salt was harvested from salt pans around the island. The island has also been used as a leper colony. Spinalonga has appeared in novels, television series, and a short film.
